HMRC is expanding its compliance programme by announcing a new taskforces that will investigate evasion in sectors and geographical areas. HMRC is expanding its compliance programme by announcing a new taskforces that will investigate evasion in sectors and geographical areas.

The remit of the new taskforces will include:

  • Restaurants in the Midlands
  • Taxi Firms in Yorkshire ,Nottingham, Derbyshire and Leicestershire
  • London market traders
  • Property rentals in London, Leeds, East Anglia, York, Leicester, Durham and Sunderland

The restaurant taskforce is an extension of an existing campaign that has already targeted dining venues in London, the North West of England and Scotland. Around 30 restaurant businesses have been prosecuted already under the initial project, with HMRC predicting a tax yield of over £13 million.  The tax office hopes the inclusion of the Midlands will add a further £2.5 million to that total.

There have been around 25 targeted HMRC campaigns since the beginning of 2011.

Ricky Steedman

Ricky worked as an Investigator in the Inland Revenue for over 20 years before founding Steedman & Company in 1987, giving him the experience and knowledge that enabled him to help so many clients over the years.

His appearance on a Channel 4 television programme about the inside workings of Revenue and Customs was watched by 4.1m which sealed his status as one of the most highly respected tax consultants to ever work in Scotland.

Ricky led all tax investigation and COP 9 cases, using his extensive knowledge to help people reach a positive resolution to their situation.

Ricky passed away suddenly and unexpectedly in June 2022 after leaving his indelible mark on the company he founded and headed for over 35 years.
