The National Health Service

National Health Service and National Insurance issues discussed:

It needn’t take the recent emergence of the swine flu pandemic to make us all realise the importance of a robust and dependable National Health Service. Even those who pay the exorbitant fees to private health institutions like BUPA should recognise the crucial importance to society that good health care provision brings.

A visible shortage of nurses, fewer doctors being trained and high profile cases of hospitals infected with deadly bugs combine to create a service not satisfactory for any developed country. The cost to restore the NHS to a level we will all be content with is calculated at hundreds of billions.

The choice is that we do something now for our children’s sake or descend further down the line of having a health system where an unacceptable number of people die due to a lack of funding. Any party that adopts a stance of increasing the National Insurance rate is one worth high praise, but it is the people who must decide to back such a policy.

Countries such as Norway and Sweden enjoy the highest level of health care on the planet and do so out of paying for it. Those who can afford to, should sacrifice some of their income to give this country the bosom of care and support it deserves. It’s a case of pay now or suffer later.
